A little bit over due, I've started my next adventure: Graduate school (at the age of 40!) in the US. That means I'm no longer guiding, but a huge chunk of my heart will always be in Yakushima.

Hope you all are off to a lovely 2020! Back from some me-time, I got the year started by letting the neighbors talk me into fishing. (I haven’t caught a fish since childhood, but I may have broken a rib trying!) Anyways, I threw the line too far.
✅First swim of the year here was also a reminder that it’s much too warm for January.

Donation Theft

Unfortunate news:
As the tourist season begins, I hate to share this with you. About a week ago we learned that an employee stole (and gambled away) 29000000 yen (around 260,000usd. The final total may vary.) from the donation money received last year. That hurts. That’s my money and your money—money to keep the toilets from overflowing and the trails pristine. What hurts even more is the loss of trust. We are shocked and ashamed we allowed this to happen. As a guide, I feel obligated to donate and ask guests who enter the world heritage site to donate. But if you hike to Jomon Sugi or Mt Miyanoura today, you will probably not be asked to donate. You can still donate if you ask, and we are always grateful for the generosity of visitors. But until we have time to decide how to move forward, it is difficult to ask visitors for money, even though we know we need donations to make it through this year and every year. (The attached article is the only one I found in English. Please note we have recommended ¥1000 for day hikers and ¥2000 for campers per visit to Yakushima, and there is no mountain here called Okudake. Shiratani Unsuikyo Park and Yakusugiland Park are unaffected.) http://www.asahi.com/sp/ajw/articles/AJ201902260073.html

A cryptomeria (Japanese cedar, sugi) embraced by the remains of wheel tree (trochodendron araloides) is one of my favorite trees on the trek to Jomon Sugi. A friend taught me that wheel trees give carbon to their cryptomeria hosts, but it is the fate of cryptomeria to outlive their companions and see many generations of lodgers come and go.

The much-loved Yakusugi tree at the beginning of the hike to Miyanoura Daké lost its main branch in the last typhoon, and the forestry folks have cleared it from the path, leaving several cross-sections of branches visible to hikers. On the bigger pieces, I can count up to around 300 rings (give or take a lot), but on the smaller ones, the grain is so tight I can't count!
#Yakusugi #Yodogo #
